Mr. Durrett was drafted into the US Army Airforces and placed on guard duty in the states and numerous airbases. He was transfered to the infantry and sent overseas as a replacement in the January 1945. His primary duty was as assistant machine gunner and was on the front lines for nearly 5 months. He was awarded the bronze star for volunteering to rescue a wounded comrade three hundred yards to their front in the heat of battle on Feb. 3, 1945 near Herrisheim, France.
