In March 1945, while on radar-picket duty near Okinawa, his destroyer was attacked by a kamikaze. The ship's gunfire appeared to separate the plane from its 1,200 pound bomb, which passed through the ship's hull and exploded in the water on the far side. The burning plane narrowly missed the ship and crashed in the sea. One man was killed and a dozen others wounded. The ship was credited with downing a total of 9 planes.
