Mr. Gallagher's trans-Atlantic crossing was interrupted by a ship collision that required a return to New York during March 1945. He arrived in France and after a brief stay in Paris, went to the front lines. His primary duties were laying telephone wire. He was wounded through both hips, April 5, 1945 near Hanover, Germany. He spent over two years recuperating in hopitals.
