Mr. Gutshall worked first on USS Ranger (CV-4) in Atlantic transporting planes to Iceland for British before the war. There he was a spotter. He was then transferred to VF-72 on the USS Wasp (CV-7) in the Pacific when war broke out. The squadron transferred to USS Hornet (CV-8) and was on flight deck when the carrier was attacked by Japanese aircraft and sunk. Later, he was assigned to escort carriers Altamaha and Nassau before a brief stay at San Diego Air Station in 1943. Later transported to the Manus Islands in the South Pacific where he worked at the air station there when the war ended.
