Mr. Murphy was trained as infantry. He shipped to Philippines as the Pacific war ended. While Mr. Murphy was enroute, he volunteered in ship's mess where he was taught to bake bread. When he arrived in Tokyo as part of Army of Occupation, he was assigned to the Bakery Company. Two months later, transferred to Techukawa AFB where he remained until discharged. After about one year, he re-enlisted and spent the majority of his 21 years working in different army bakeries including in Japan during the Korean War. Retired in 1966.
