Salina Army Base, Equador
While enroute to North Africa on board a cattle boat out of the port of New Orleans, his ship came under torpedo attack resulting in the rudder of the ship being shot away and the ship left adrift. Over 1,000 troops were towed three days later to Panama for refit. He remained in Panama until transferred to Equador and assigned duty as engineer for 2 1/2 years
